A Family Legacy in the Mission: Four generations of Stamper optometrists

Optometrists from the Stamper family have been serving San Francisco residents for more than a century. Established in 1913, Stamper Optometry, formerly California Optical Co., is run by third-generation proprietor Dr. Bruce Stamper and his nephew, fourth-generation optometrist Dr. David Stamper. Throughout waves of neighborhood changes in the Mission, the family business is still going strong.

1932 ad jogs memories for family of optometrists

There’s nothing like free advertising — even when it’s 84 years out of date. Kentfield resident Beverly Stamper was reading the July 15 issue of J., as she does every week, when she noticed a very familiar place. In the paper’s regular “From the J. archive” section, an advertisement from 1932 promising to help customers “Hear Better with VIBRAPHONES” touted the services of the California Optical Co., with locations in Berkeley and Oakland and two in San Francisco, at 181 Post Steet and 2508 Mission Street.
