Whether you’re 8 or 80 if you are unhappy with your smile, orthodontics may be the best solution for you. Well-aligned teeth have many advantages, including easier cleaning, better oral hygiene, clearer speech and a more pleasant smile.

How do I know orthodontics is right for me or my child?

The best way to determine whether orthodontics is right for you is to come in for a thorough examination with one of our dentists. Orthodontics is a versatile branch of dentistry that can be used alone, or in combination with maxillofacial or cosmetic dentistry. So before we determine what is best for you, we want to know all about your issues and give you the comprehensive information you need to make a decision that best fits your life.

Here are some of the common conditions treated with orthodontics:

  • Underbite and overbite – Many people are born with a condition called Anteroposterior deviations. In laymans terms, this is called an overbite or underbite.
  • Crowding – Crowding is a common orthodontic problem which occurs when there is insufficient space for the normal growth and development of adult teeth or when teeth move because of age or deterioration of other teeth.
  • Spacing – In many cases, teeth are spaced too far apart or adult teeth are genetically missing and therefore spaces between teeth occur. Orthodontists can fix these spaces and in many cases use the help of a cosmetic dentist or implant dentist to add a tooth where one is missing.

Orthodontists can use all types of treatments. Here is an overview of some of the most common treatments:

  • Braces – A metal or ceramic bracket is affixed to each tooth, and a wire is inserted through.  The orthodontist is able to gradually train the teeth into proper alignment by regularly adjusting the wire.  When the desired results are achieved, the brackets are completely removed.
  • Invisalign® – These clear aligners offer many patients an invisible way to straighten teeth. Invisalign® does not interfere with eating or playing a wind instrument and works in the same way as the traditional metal braces.
